Despite the time gap since the last posting (getting married is a time-consuming), the Paper Upgrade has some intriguing plans coming. Daniel Reetz, the organizer behind DIYBookScanners.org, is likely coming to visit us in January with plans to build a new book scanner based on the GPL'd design and cut using a computer-controlled mill (CNC): http://diybookscanner.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1192.

Scan to PDF for free and OCR for free too with Qiqqa -- Acrobat Professional replacement?

If you run a Google search for "scan to PDF for free," you'll currently run across an excellent Golod.com blog post (http://www.golod.com/2010/02/how-to-scan-to-pdf-for-free/) encouraging those of you with Windows PC's to download iCopy and CutePDF. Both are free programs. The first scans and prints whichever document is located in your scanner. The second redirects that printout to a PDF file, effectively allowing you to scan documents to PDF for free.

501(c)(3) Exemption from the IRS

On April 30th, 2011, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) accepted the Paper Upgrade Project's request for recognition as a 501(C)(3) tax-exempt organization! The IRS considers it a public charity. New website

Now that Drupal 7 has a stable release, we have updated our website to run on the improved platform. In addition, we have added CAPTCHA's (to reduce spam), a newer theme, and have cleaned up the user database. These improvements should help the speed and performance of the site for everyone.

1023 Application submitted

Following two outstanding meetings with our nonprofit attorney and one with our accountant, we have submitted 1023, Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. If the IRS determines that the nature of our work is tax exempt, your donations will be tax deductible. The process lasts anywhere from 3 months to 6 months or longer, depending on many factors. If approved, we expect to begin operations at that time, thereby helping students to accelerate their learning.

A big thanks go to both the How to Form A Non-Profit Company by Anthoy Mancuso (Nolo Press) and the Oregon Non-Profit Organization Handbook (Cynthia Cumfer & Kay Sohl Fourth Edition) from the Nonprofit Association of Oregon (NAO) (Formerly TACS).
